Tetris (2023)

As we all know, Tetris was invented by Russian Aleksey Pajitnov and a huge success in the Soviet Union,, where copyright was an unknown concept and everyone just sharing all over the place. But the West was very interested in acquiring the worldwide rights and approached the Soviet authorities about this. British media giant Maxwell reached some sort of deal and began distributing the game to computers, but the ownership of the rights to arcade games and handhelds was still unclear, and this copyright jungle war is what the movie is all about. The story is served up as a sort of semi-documentary romp that's pretty loosely based on reality, but if you're into eighties nostalgia and want a refresher on the early days of video games, it's good entertainment, spiced up with an "Argo"-style ending that cross-cuts between a frantic KGB car chase and a military parade in the Red Square.

Taron Egerton plays Dutch-American businessman Henk Rogers, who contacts the Soviet state apparatus and quickly finds he's stuck his hand in a geopolitical hornet's nest.
