Black Bird (6 part mini series) (2022)

The series has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike on Rotten Tomatoes and is also high on Imdb, so I must be doing something wrong if I'm not giving it top marks. The story is even written and produced by Dennis Lehane, the man behind "Mystic River" and "Shutter Island", and stars Taron Egerton, who blew me away as Elton John in "Rocket Man", and Paul Walter Hauser, known from the title role in Clint Eastwood's "Richard Jewell". The story is a docudrama based on a real-life case in which a drug convict (Egerton) strikes a deal with the FBI, who want to put him in the same prison as a suspected serial killer (Hauser) in the hope that he can get him to reveal where he buried the bodies of the 21 women he is suspected of killing.

The actors are very good, especially Hauser, but I think Egerton is miscast. The charismatic young Briton is more of a rock star or Greek god than a drug-dealing redneck, who seems a bit too neat and clean-cut among the brutalized psychopaths in the maximum-security prison. And the story could easily have been told in three or four episodes instead of slogging along in six.

But then again: Don't take my word for it. Watch it and judge for yourself.
