Mission Impossible 7: Dead Reckoning, Part 1 (2023)

For the fourth time in a month, I've just watched some awesome action with fierce fights in and on a runaway train. First the TV series 'Citadel', then 'Extraction 2', then 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny' and now 'Mission Impossible 7: Dead Reckoning Part 1', and the last one is by far the best, although 'Extraction 2' comes close with an incredible 21-minute oneshot. The whole of MI7 is a marathon of fantastic action sequences, but the final scene with the train beats everything, and that's just the first part of a wild story in which Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his friends Benji (Simon Pegg), Luther (Ving Rhames) and Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) are up against an AI called the Entity, which has become sentient and is now trying to take over the world, aided by one of Ethan's old enemies, Gabriel (Esai Morales). The only thing that can stop the Entity is a cruciform key split in two pieces that everyone is now after, because whoever has a complete key can control the rogue AI. Along the way, Ethan is aided by fickleminded pickpocket Grace (Hayley Atwell), whom we're sure to meet again, and we also meet up with last movie's "White Widow" villainess (Vanessa Kirby) and CIA Director Kittridge (Henry Czerny), known from the very first MI movie.

With seven films now, the Mission Impossible franchise has proven that it can give both Bond and Bourne a run for their money, and this story is no less impressive than any of the previous installments.

4 out of 5 wiped memories. The Russo brothers, known from Marvel's 'Infinity War' and 'Endgame' and Netflix's 'The Gray Man', are at it again, this time with an entire series franchise that already has Italian and Indian spinoffs and a guaranteed second season....
